Dallas Head Fi Meet

Here are some random pictures from the recent Dallas Head Fi meet, held 07-28-07.

There was a lot of nice gear, good company and the meet was a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who made my first meet so enjoyable!

A few random ramblings:

  • Denon 5000 headphones--what a great headphone, especially in light of the price. Much better than I expected them to be, and overall just a great sounding set of cans. Absolutely fantastic bass impact, depth and definition. And, as a bonus, these are the most comfortable set of cans I have ever tried, even more comfy than my Beyer DT990's, and that's saying something.
  • Ultrasone ED9. Stunningly transparent through the upper midrange (almost "electrostatic like"), fantastic deep and tight bass, one of the best headphones I have ever experienced. I loved them, and the pair at the meet only had a "few" hours on them as the owner had just received them Wednesday.
  • Singlepower amplifier. I really dug the "industrial" look of this amplifier, and from what I could tell, it sounds as good as it looks.
  • I was also pleasantly surprised at how well my modified Zhaolu held up when compared to MUCH more expensive amplifiers. These little units are gems.
  • Same for the Shanling amplifier and CD player combo. There was someone listening to the setup pretty much the whole meet, so that says something.
  • Whoever built the headphone stands that were at the meet does beautiful work. I must own one of your headphone stands!
  • The big brown Pickering headphones were the coolest cans I have ever seen! They were so heavy they kept falling off of my head, how cool is that?
  • Electrostatic headphones have an upper midrange to die for. Both the Stax and the HE60's possessed that certain "something", or perhaps "lack of something" in the upper mids that is really quite special.

I'll add more ramblings as I remember more stuff. Stay tuned.
